League Phase Teams
The earliest continental matches emerged with the 1895 World Championship between English champions Sunderland and Scottish champions Hearts. This inspired regional initiatives like the Challenge Cup (Austro-Hungarian Empire), the Mitropa Cup (1927), and the Latin Cup (1949).
Following reports of the South American Championship of Champions in 1948, Gabriel Hanot, editor of L'Équipe, successfully petitioned UEFA to establish a unified European tournament. Conceived in Paris in 1955, it was named the European Champion Clubs' Cup.
Pre-Champions League Era
- 1927: Mitropa Cup introduced in Central Europe.
- 1930: Coupe des Nations organized in Geneva.
- 1955: Founding of the European Cup in Paris.
The competition has evolved through distinct phases of national and club dominance, expanding from a straight-knockout cup to a multi-entrant league.
Real Madrid's Initial Reign
Led by Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás, Real Madrid won the first five consecutive European Cup titles, a record that remains unmatched.
Dutch & English Hegemony
Ajax won three consecutive titles (1971–1973), emulated by Bayern Munich. English clubs then dominated from 1977 to 1984, winning seven out of eight trophies.
Rebrand to the UEFA Champions League
The tournament added a group stage and took on its current name. In 1997–98, the competition expanded to allow multiple non-champion entrants from top leagues.
Beginning in the 2024–25 season, UEFA implemented a historic format change, replacing the traditional 32-team group stage with an expanded 36-team single-table league phase.
Under this system, each team plays eight matches against eight different opponents (four home and four away). The top eight teams qualify automatically for the Round of 16, while teams finishing 9th to 24th enter a two-legged playoff round to determine the remaining knockout berths.
Current Champions
Paris Saint-Germain are the reigning champions, having beaten Arsenal on penalties in the 2026 final to claim their second consecutive European Cup title.
