The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in India, organized and administered by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Founded in 2007, it features ten city-based franchise teams and commands an exclusive window within the International Cricket Council's Future Tours Programme.

The Historical Journey

Foundation: In response to the unapproved Indian Cricket League (ICL), the BCCI officially announced the creation of the Indian Premier League—a structured, franchise-based Twenty20 cricket tournament, led by Lalit Modi.
Inaugural Campaign: The original eight franchises competed in the opening season. The Rajasthan Royals claimed the first championship trophy by defeating Chennai Super Kings in Navi Mumbai.
Expansion & Contraction: Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala joined in 2011. Following financial anomalies and contract terminations, Kochi (2011), Deccan Chargers (2012), and Pune (2013) were eventually dissolved.
Integrity Suspensions: Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals faced a two-year operational suspension following investigations into spot-fixing and betting. Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions played temporarily as replacements.
Decacorn Milestone & Double-Crowns: Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants entered, bringing the roster back to 10 teams. Royal Challengers Bengaluru secured consecutive championship titles in 2025 and 2026.
