The flagship quadrennial international basketball competition held by FIBA, bringing together 32 senior men's national teams competing for the iconic Naismith Trophy.
TOURNAMENT OVERVIEW & STATS
Conceived at the 1948 London Olympics by FIBA Secretary-General Renato William Jones, the tournament was known as the FIBA World Championship from 1950 to 2010. Rebranded as the FIBA Basketball World Cup in 2014, it moved to a standalone quadrennial schedule in 2019 off-set from the FIFA World Cup. Champions receive the gold Naismith Trophy.
HISTORICAL ERAS & EVOLUTION
South American Inception
First 5 tournaments held in South America. Argentina won inaugural 1950 title. Teams from the Americas dominated early years winning 8 of first 9 medals before Soviet Union and Yugoslavia emerged in 1963.
The Big Four Dominance Era
Controlled by four powerhouse nations: USA, Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Brazil. Between 1963 and 1990, every single tournament medal was won exclusively by these four nations.
NBA Players Debut & Parity
Active NBA players allowed for the first time in 1994 (Toronto, USA won gold). 2002 Indianapolis saw FR Yugoslavia win gold over Argentina while Dirk Nowitzki (Germany) earned MVP.
24-Team Expansion Era
Expanded to 24 teams in 2006 (Spain won first gold defeating Greece). USA won back-to-back gold medals in 2010 (Turkey) and 2014 (Spain) led by Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving respectively.
32-Team Modern Era & Global Parity
Expanded to 32 teams in 2019 (China, won by Spain). In 2023, Germany achieved its first-ever World Cup gold medal defeating Serbia 83–77 in Pasay. Upcoming editions set for Qatar (2027) and France (2031).

🌍 2-Year Qualification Windows
Qualifying takes place over 6 playing windows across 4 zones: FIBA Europe (12 berths), FIBA Americas (7 berths), Asia-Pacific (7 berths), FIBA Africa (5 berths), and Host Nation (1 berth).
🏀 32-Team Tournament Structure
8 preliminary groups of 4 teams. Top 2 advance to 2nd Group Stage (4 groups of 4). Top 2 from 2nd group stage advance to 8-team single-elimination Quarterfinals, Semis & Gold Medal Final.
🏆 The Naismith Trophy
Awarded since 1967 in honor of Dr. James Naismith. Modern 2017 version by Thomas Lyte stands 60cm high, made almost entirely out of gold with names of all past world champions engraved at base.
