Headquartered in New York City and Secaucus, NJ, the NBA is the second-wealthiest professional sports league in the world by revenue (after the NFL). NBA players are the world's highest-paid athletes by average annual salary. The league operates 30 franchises (29 in the US, 1 in Canada), alongside the WNBA, NBA G League, NBA 2K League, and Basketball Africa League (BAL).
HISTORICAL ERAS & DYNASTIES
Founding & Early Era
First game played Nov 1, 1946 (Toronto Huskies vs NY Knicks; first basket by Ossie Schectman). BAA merged with NBL in 1949. Color barrier broken by Wataru Misaka (1947) & Earl Lloyd (1950). George Mikan led Minneapolis Lakers to 5 titles. 24-second shot clock created in 1954.
Celtics Dynasty & ABA Merger
Bill Russell led Boston Celtics to 11 titles in 13 years (including 8 straight from 1959–1966). Wilt Chamberlain set single-game scoring (100 pts) and rebounding (55) records. Jerry West silhouette logo introduced in 1971. 1976 ABA merger added Spurs, Nuggets, Pacers, and Nets.
Magic, Bird & Jordan Dynasty
3-point shot added in 1979. Larry Bird & Magic Johnson revitalized league rivalry. David Stern became commissioner in 1984. Michael Jordan & Scottie Pippen led Chicago Bulls to two 3-peats (6 titles). The 1992 Olympic "Dream Team" popularized basketball globally. WNBA founded in 1996.
Lakers & Spurs Dynasties
Kobe Bryant & Shaquille O'Neal achieved 3-peat (2000-02) under Phil Jackson. Tim Duncan & Gregg Popovich won 5 titles with Spurs. Superteam era formed with Miami Heat "Big Three" (LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh - 2012, 2013 titles). David Stern retired in 2014, succeeded by Adam Silver.
Warriors Dynasty & Curry Era
Stephen Curry's 3-point revolution led Golden State Warriors to 4 championships and a historic 73-9 season. LeBron James led Cleveland Cavaliers to historic 3-1 Finals comeback in 2016. Toronto Raptors won Canada's first title in 2019. Season played in Disney World "Bubble" in 2020.
Modern Parity Era
CBA luxury tax apron rules ended superteams. 7 different champions crowned in 7 years: Nuggets (2023), Celtics 18th title (2024), Thunder (2025), and New York Knicks ended 53-year drought winning the 2026 title (Finals MVP: Jalen Brunson).

COMPETITION STRUCTURE & RULES
🏀 Regular Season & NBA Cup
October to April. Each team plays 82 games (41 home/away). Includes 16 divisional games, 36 conference games, and 30 cross-conference games. Features the NBA Cup in-season tournament (introduced 2023–24), Christmas Day marquee games (since 1947), and MLK Day games.
⭐ All-Star Weekend & Trade Deadline
Held in February. Features fan/coach voting for All-Star starters & captains, Rising Stars Challenge, Skills Challenge, 3-Point Contest, and Slam Dunk Contest. Trade deadline falls on 16th Thursday of the season (February) at 3 PM Eastern.
🏆 Playoffs & NBA Finals
April to June. Features Play-In tournament followed by top 8 seeds per conference in best-of-7 series (2-2-1-1-1 home court format). Champions receive the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy, championship rings, and Bill Russell Finals MVP Award.
